{"id":1991,"date":"2026-06-23T10:25:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T15:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareletter.milwaukeequakers.org\/?p=1991"},"modified":"2026-06-23T10:25:22","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T15:25:22","slug":"mercy-for-the-vile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareletter.milwaukeequakers.org\/?p=1991","title":{"rendered":"Mercy for the Vile?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Mike Soika<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercy is a theme I continue to revisit \u2013 mostly because I fail miserably in the application of mercy to those who aren\u2019t my friends and family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his book, <em>The Sign of Jonas<\/em>, Thomas Merton wrote a beautiful passage on the topic of mercy; one that haunts me every time I find myself failing the test of forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Voice of God is heard in Paradise:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWhat was vile has become precious\u2026I have always known the vile as precious: for what is vile I know not at all.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What was cruel has become merciful\u2026I have always overshadowed Jonas with My mercy, and cruelty I know not at all.&nbsp; Have you had sight of Me, Jonas, My child?&nbsp; Mercy within mercy, within mercy.&nbsp; I have forgiven the universe without end\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It feels to me like we are living in a time of exceptional vile which can be viewed in all sectors of our culture.&nbsp; We certainly see it in politics, but vile behavior can also be found in the entertainment industry, in sports, and even in religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And don\u2019t get me started on the men (and women) who preyed upon young girls for their own carnal pleasures.&nbsp; Vile is an easy tag for them, at least it is for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cI have always known the vile as precious\u2026I have forgiven the universe without end.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am challenged beyond my capability to see Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, Jeffery Epstein, or Mitch McConnel as precious (just to name a few.)&nbsp; And if the term precious is a bar too high for me to climb \u2013 I also can\u2019t get to mercy for them.&nbsp; I can\u2019t forgive them for what they have done to the people and institutions of our country for their own personal gain of power and money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas Merton may say it more eloquently, but we Quakers also call ourselves to a higher standard.&nbsp; When we say \u201cthere is that of God in everyone\u201d aren\u2019t we really saying that everyone \u2013 and we mean everyone \u2013 is precious?&nbsp; And if everyone is precious \u2013 aren\u2019t we also saying that everyone is deserving of our mercy?
