{"id":2005,"date":"2026-06-23T10:25:57","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T15:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shareletter.milwaukeequakers.org\/?p=2005"},"modified":"2026-06-23T10:25:57","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T15:25:57","slug":"two-children-books-a-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shareletter.milwaukeequakers.org\/?p=2005","title":{"rendered":"Two Children Books &#8211; A Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Jane Nickodem<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I admit it!&nbsp; I am forever delighted by children\u2019s literature and am always on the lookout for<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the next children\u2019s book to enchant me.&nbsp; A favorite genre is picture books that illustrate poems<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or have text that rhymes. On a recent trip to Door County, I happened upon two delightful but<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">very different books that resonated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the bookstore at The Clearing, a folk school in Ellison Bay, I found a small picture<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">book illustrated by Tequitia Andrews.&nbsp; The text and title of the book is a poem by Langston<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hughes called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/poets.org\/poem\/earth-song\">An Earth Song<\/a><\/strong><strong><u>.<\/u><\/strong>&nbsp; The poem depicts a child-like and plainly stated deep longing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">for the return of spring. The simple and bold illustrations are impactful and appealing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tequitia (tah-key-tah) Andrews, from Richmond Virginia, is an artist and illustrator who has had<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a life-long passion for art.&nbsp; A self-taught artist, she used YouTube videos to hone her<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Earth Song is part of a series called \u201cpetite poems\u201d by Cameron + Company<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Petaluma,California).&nbsp; Hope Is the Thing With Feathers by Emily Dickinson and Theme in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yellow by Carl Sandburg are also in this Cameron Kids series.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another children\u2019s picture book that attracted my attention <strong>is <u>Equality\u2019s Call: The Story of<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>Voting Rights in America<\/u><\/strong> by Deborah Diesen, who is known for Pout-Pout Fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s an excellent and compelling overview of the history of voting rights written in verse.&nbsp; A<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">mantra-like&nbsp; phrase builds throughout the text, for example: <em>\u201cBut we heard growing clearer<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Equality\u2019s call:&nbsp; A right isn\u2019t a right till it\u2019s granted to all.<\/em>\u201d This book would be appropriate for<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">introducing young children to the Quaker Peace Testimony.
