give thanks

to bridges for their sturdy

legs braced straight and true

despite drifts of snow and weighted semis

for their cables that withstand gales

their girders resisting the fire, the freeze

of wildly shifting temperatures

they support us with grace

they span the dark places

beneath, easing our fear

they allow us to cross over
