Winter Windowsill

By Rebecca Evans

The geranium seed I gathered
from the autumn garden and
planted in a peat pot to grow
on my kitchen sink windowsill
has sent up its first pair of true leaves.

I meditate on Lord Tennyson’s poem,
Flower in the Crannied Wall, and
wait, while I wash each evening’s
dishes, to watch the universe
expand before my lowered eyes.
